Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was named one of the nine winners of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture which was held on 4 September 2007. UTP clinched the award for its ultra-modern structure that was rich in subtle traditional textile designs.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and His Highness the Aga Khan, presented the award at the PETRONAS Philharmonic Hall. Y.Bhg. Datuk Ainon Marziah Wahi, Chairman of UTP Board of Directors received the award on behalf of UTP.
The award honours architectural excellence in Muslim-dominated societies. A total of 343 structures were nominated and, of these, 27 were short-listed before the final nine were selected.

Hadhramaut in Yemen, the Central Market project in Burkina Faso, the restoration of the Amiriya Complex in Yemen, the Moulmein Rise Residential Tower in Singapore, the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the rehabilitation of the Walled City of Nicosia in Cyprus and the School in Rudrapur project in Dinajpur, Bangladesh.
